Picking up the pace on Mt. Wachusett

Luke leading the way across a ski trail.

Had an odd experience on the trails today. The boy and I found ourselves on top of a mountain sooner than expected.

Granted, at 2,006 feet, Mt. Wachusett doesn’t compare to the taller summits of the White Mountains. Still, today was something different. We were both moving fast without hurrying. We never needed to rest — we stopped only to take in views and take pictures. We even curled around the back side of the mountain and climbed half of it again for fun.

It’s an odd experience to be climbing without being in a constant state of oxygen deprivation.

Maybe a winter’s worth of running and snowshoeing is starting to pay off. In any case, it has us both looking forward to what the next several months will bring.
